There’s a man who almost every morning opens the doors to the history of art and the history of Christianity.

His name is Gianni, and he’s the head key keeper of the Vatican’s Museums.
He is the sole man who, at 5.30 am, has the privilege to listens to the profound silence of the Sistine Chapel at dawn, while his own steps echo through the corridors and the most beautiful rooms in the world.

Gianni says “I’m a key keeper, head key keeper, but I’m still a doorman that opens a museum”….the Vatican Museums, which contain “the biggest and most beautiful history that exists in the world.”

There are 2797 keys that open the doors of the Vatican Museums, contained in a bunker of maximum security.
The keys open over 300 doors, along a 4.6 mile route that allows more than 28,000 visitors every day to admire the incredible works of art contained within the museums.

“I know the smell that is waiting for me when I open the first door, is the smell of history, the smell that men before us have breathed in.” It’s the very same ground that they have walked, loved, and cried on…” he says.
